This piece is a part of Food Tools Design Club, a series of monthly open design calls that invite the MOLD community to experiment, play, and submit designs for food tools.
Last month we put out an open call to the MOLD community asking you to submit designs for a Utensil for Eating. In response, we received an outpouring of ideas that reimagined the act of eating into one of play, of commoning, of sensorial activation. From a spoon designed for the singular, joyous act of eating one blueberry at a time, to edible sauce scoopers that help diners savor every last drop, we were deeply inspired by the contributions of our community. We’ve gathered a few of our favorites to showcase here.
Forkyounot: For the long-distance relationship
Contributor: Andee Ashelman
A reimagined eating instrument that is multi-configurable, aiming to foster meaningful dining experiences.
Mayo Chapstick
Contributor: Aria McManus
Good for spreading on your lips and your sandwiches.
Sloppy Fork
Contributor: Punpun Phophientong
Inspired by the posture of sport-fencing, users must adopt an extreme stance, extending their arm and straightening their leg to use the fork effectively. This disruptive design reimagines a simple daily activity with unexpected physicality.
Finger & Palm Hats
Contributor: Risa Ueno
Made from celery and rhubarb fibers, people use hats instead of cutlery. Data of that which was eaten remains in the fibers which contain the leftovers.
Coconut Meat Grater
Contributor: Giovanni Florian
A kitchen tool designed to grate coconut meat. It is made of a plastic handle that mounts a serrated circular blade of stainless steel.
