For this workshop, Out of Seam will cover the basis of the pH scale. Many agents are used to activate a wide range of color from one dye material depending on the alkaline or acidic molecular components that constitutes the makeup of the material, the agent and the matter. Acidifiers such as citric acid, lemons and vinegar typically shift the color towards reds, oranges, yellows and pinks while alkaline agents such as baking soda and wood ash and shift the color toward blues, greens, yellows. Of course, through experimentation this will shift and change depending on your interactions with the space. This is a hands-on, interactive workshop with all materials provided, including a 24”x24” cotton scarf and PDF file to continue your natural dye journey. This workshop will take place at Juno Medical Center — 677 Atlantic Ave from 2-4PM on Sunday, August 27, 2023.
