Come celebrate PLAY, a new cookbook zine featuring recipes, essays, and artwork from a community of LGBTQ+ chefs, writers, and artists. Our launch will be on June 4 from 7pm-10pm at Public Records in Brooklyn. DJ sets by Macy Rodman, Nasir MF, and Meilgaarden.
All proceeds from the zine will go to mutual aid projects addressing housing and food insecurity among the queer and trans communities: The Okra Project (NYC) and Intransitive (Arkansas).
By buying a copy of the zine, you will be directing funds to queer mutual aid projects. Zines will be available during the event with a pay-as-you-wish option so that you can donate as much as you’d like to these initiatives!
The project is being led by Founder and Editor-in-Chief, Ludwig Hurtado, Senior Editor, Colleen Hamilton, and Creative Director, Gabriella Lewis. They are three folks in the food and media space who got tired of seeing tired Pride month stories about “queer food” that don’t address the actual problem of food insecurity for the most vulnerable among us. They felt it important to center these narratives as an antidote to “corporate pride.” All three were devastated by the ongoing attacks on trans youth— which have led to alarming rates of homelessness and food insecurity—and wanted to tap into the long history of queer mutual aid.
Their publisher, Metalabel, is a new platform for releasing creative work.
