The Toronto-based designer and illustrator Allister Lee is an artist that communicates through a love of materials. Whether it’s the textured geography of Chinatowns around the world or his encyclopedic homage to the humble black marker, Lee elevates the details and artifacts of the every day into works of art. His signature illustrative style and distinct design work can be found across product categories ranging from footwear and apparel (Vans, Stussy, Adidas), lifestyle (skatepark murals, restaurant branding) and packaging (The North Face, Nike).
Illustrations by Allister Lee from the Black is Beautiful, a visual compendium of black markers from around the world.
For MOLD’s design week newspaper, SNACKS #01, Lee created “HAUTE DOG COUTURE,” a whimsical collage depicting the adventures of Hotdog Furcoat, a hot dog in a fur coat. Lee’s recurring character first appeared in a limited edition French language zine where the “international fashionista and lady-of-leisure” danced, smoked, strolled, and sashayed across the page in outfits constructed with simple strokes and pattern play. Follow @hotdogfurcoat’s adventures on Instagram or pickup a copy of the original zine on Shop ABC.
In celebration of New York Design Week we’re proud to announce SNACKS #01, a limited edition newspaper and poster collection featuring 18 artists and designers upending the visual tropes of food and design.
